Communicating the Death of a Leader
Handling the News with Dignity

When a company suffers a loss at the top it's important to pay proper tribute to the leader - and communicate how the organization will continue in the face of adversity. Sawmill has handled public relations for this type of situation more than once, most recently when a prominent businessman and community leader unexpectedly died.

We have long provided communications support for the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation, an organization dedicated to stimulating greater interest in African-American culture, art and genealogy.

When the organization's founder suddenly died, a strategic public relations program needed quick implementation so his death could be communicated widely and with dignity, while at the same time signaling that the foundation will continue. Key internal audiences were alerted first, and Sawmill directed a widespread online and print communications program that drew coverage in the local press and national media, including The Washington Post .

Today the organization is as strong as ever, and in 2006 a walkway was dedicated to the memory of that leader and visionary, Leonard A. Blackshear, at the location where Kunta Kinte is believed to have arrived aboard the slave ship Lord Ligonier on September 29, 1767. He was sold into slavery, later recognized by Alex Haley in "Roots."
